"Sad-ephant (nice teeth)", gouache on paper, 16" x 12", 2008
These paintings and drawings were created with concern over abuses borne by defenseless members of society. Any type of abuse is abhorrent, whether against the aged, children, minorities, or the poor and disadvantaged. I chose to focus upon animal abuse and neglect in these drawings and paintings, since animal abuse is symptomatic of a disrespect for life in all its forms. Not wishing to recount hideous news accounts, I depict these issues in an ironic, almost playful fashion. The ‘cuteness’ of certain animals enables humans to treat them as objects (much like women as decorative objects). The predators (wolves, sharks) are demonized, tortured, and killed off while the cute ones suffer in zoo prisons and from overbreeding. These issues and more are symptomatic of abuses in all facets of humanity, reflected in a myriad of society’s ills.
